An unconventional story sets in the nature of marshlands. Kya Clark, aka "Marsh Girl," is suspected of killing the late Chase Andrews in a quiet town on the North Carolina Coast. For years, the townspeople harbored stereotypes against her, isolating her to the marshes where she lived. To Kya, however, these familiar lands were sacred to her identities; she could connect with the gulls and the sands better than she could with people. When I read this story, I became heavily invested in studying the habitat of marshes. Owens does a great job of describing the setting and how it sets the mood and characterization of the story. However, I felt that at times this beautiful setting deviated from the storyline. If you're looking for a story that integrates nature with a murder mystery, then Where the Crawdads Sing may be the book for you.
