Gustavo Dudamel is back on medici.tv for an electrifying concert at the helm of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, conducting works by two of Austria's greatest composers: Mozart and Mahler! Maestro Dudamel and the world-class RCO begin the evening with the perennially delightful Overture from The Magic Flute, one of the Salzburg genius's many masterworks that combines elements of the fugue and the sonata. They then tackle Mahler's Symphony No. 4, a work with a traditional four-movement structure but many untraditional aspects—from the predominance of solos over tutti phrases to the unusual sonorities of the scordatura violin and the finale's soprano part (beautifully sung by the marvelous Camilla Tilling), this rustic and bucolic symphony brims with unique character.
