I really enjoyed the author's writing style. Shannan Martin apparently has been a blogger for some time, and this book feels like a compilation of a number of essays (blog posts?) bolstered for book form around her general theological idea: root yourself deeply where you are by sacrificing time and comfort and investing deeply in every opportunity God throws your way - this means being on the look out for opportunity and sticking your nose in other people's business and running with it when people accept your offers of help. She is very light on scripture in this book, so if you are looking for a good Bible study on loving your neighbor, this is not it. She is also light on Biblical grounding for her theology. She seems averse to considering sin wicked and calling people to repent. Her answer seems to be to love and serve them until they finally come around to that conclusion themselves. It is a watered down brand of Christianity that makes light of the very foundation of the faith: that our sin deserves punishment, but Jesus willingly took it upon himself because he loves us so much. That should lead us away from sin, not make us tolerant of it. The strengths in this book are: the push to a more patient and longsuffering love like God has for us; the push to ditch your 'safety' and 'comfort' and instead pour yourselves out to all those God directs your way; the call to love all our neighbors as we love ourselves. Shannan issues these challenges in a kind and inspiring way.
