I picked this book up as a Canada Reads book. It's not something that I would usually read. I really enjoyed it and it expanded my reading horizons. A lot of people are commenting on the politics of the book but I am a leftist so it's right up my alley. The stories are VERY relevant to 2020. It's interesting as the book was published last year. I enjoyed that it was 4 short stories. A pretty easy read I got through it on a (long) weekend.

Ooooh, I guess Cory lacks that crucial NSA training, eh? Some "better than average researcher" doesn't like his opinions being deleted! If they were as reasoned and persuasive as the review here, I'd delete them too.

A great set of pithy, pointed parables about modern society and technology. The first entry (also the best IMHO) draws a parallel between big technology companies that lock in consumers to their own products, and the experience of new immigrants to a society; Doctorow provides a fantastically witty deconstruction of smart appliances... The remaining stories take on institutional racism, flame-blog culture (and more importantly, big health insurance), and an updated "Masque of the Red Death" in modern-day survivalist terms.

I apologize but I must point out that the king of snarky, Cory Doctorow, is one of the most censoring, anti-free speech types out there - - the ultimate hypocrite!
I don't care what a poseur he is, or what he claims, he censored and censored and censored at his site, and now since the comments are hidden it really doesn't matter, since they normally won't show up in searches. In other words, yet another fraudster . . . .
