Happily Ever After ...Or Happily Nevermore? Gisela's childhood was filled with laughter and visits from nobles such as the duke and his young son. But since her father's death, each day has been filled with nothing but servitude to her stepmother. So when Gisela teaches the duke's son, Valten-the boy she has daydreamed about for years-is throwing a ball in hopes of finding a wife, she vows to find a way to attend, even if it's only for a taste of a life she'll never have. To her surprise, she catches Valten's eye. Though he is rough around the edges, Gisela finds Valten has completely captured her heart. But other forces are bent on keeping the two from falling further in love, putting Gisela in more danger than she ever imagined.

Gisela has loved Valten since she was a little girl, and with a twist of fate, he may be falling in love with her too. But one of Valten's enemies may cause their happily ever after to crumble. This twist on Cinderella is fantastic and captivating.

Melanie Dickerson is my favorite author for sure. This book: The Captive Maiden is very loosely based on Cinderella. A nice story from the Hagenheim series. It is written in a way that focuses on both Gisela and Valten's viewpoint. Very interesting to read. I would definitely recommend this book to all.

The only thing I regret with this book is not picking it up earlier in time. The dress of Gisela, the selfless and beautiful protagonist of this story, caught my eye a while ago. With doubt, I borrowed it and read it. This book blew me away completely with its twist on the classical story of Cinderella, made kind of obvious from the cover and start. However, this would be by far one of my favourite reads, as it is a medieval spin of a fairytale with adventure, romance, and suspense. In fact, all the books by this author regarding fairytales in these times are well written. The storyline moves in a way that readers cannot even think to expect and know exactly what will happen next! In reality, the classic fairytale has been fleshed out and brought to life, and readers should definitely give this book a shot! 5/5 - @Siri of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
