Alex finds out that there is a price set on his head by the Council that he has been assisting - his enemies and his past (as well as fear of what he might do in the future) have finally caught up with him. And it isn't just Alex that has a problem here because his friends and associates are in danger too. Alex has only a few days to persuade at least one Council member to change their vote and to find a way to save his friends.

This is a tension-filled novel because everything that Alex does to try and get out of his predicament seems to go wrong. He discovers that others fear him because they are making assumptions about his future relationship with Richard, his ex-master, and many think that he is already aligned with him. Alex's lack of power is not a good thing but the power of his enemies is what will bring him down. Slowly, everything that Alex held dear is destroyed. Alex is forced to flee and his ability to read the immediate future shows him that there may be no way out.
