A year after the events of ‘The Lightning Thief’, the tree of Camp Half-Blood has been poisoned, opening the camp's borders to constant monster attacks and forcing the demigods to venture out and find the golden fleece, which can cure the dying tree.
‘The Sea of Monsters’ has stakes, not on the same world-ending level as the other entries, but is more focused on developing its characters, expanding on Luke’s plan to destroy Mount Olympus/its Gods, and also heavily focuses on Percy and Tyson(A newly introduced character). Their relationship adds an extra dynamic to Percy, and questions his relationship with his father Poseidon. We also get to see Luke’s thought process for the first time, as well as set up their conflict against the Gods. While Percy and Tyson are developed, we also get to see Annabeth’s past relationship with Luke for the first time. Each of the main characters are further developed in this entry, and as a result their conflicts feel very real. Like the previous entry, The sea of monsters is full of page-turning story and action. It is definitely worth a read, and a must read for any fan of ‘The Lightning Thief’.

The Sea of Monsters continues Percy Jackson's life in a fantasy world with the Greek gods. The story reveals that Camp Half-Blood, a safe haven for demigods, is under threat as its magical barrier deteriorates. A prophecy is given to Percy and his friends to retrieve a golden fleece to heal the tree that maintains the barrier over Camp Half-Blood. However, Percy and his friends must travel to dangerous waters filled with mythical beasts that love demigod-desert. As well as clash with a friend turned traitor against Olympus. Readers are further introduced to more interesting characters and a dolphin; characters that anyone can enjoy. The plot and the transitions between the story as always are entertaining for most ages.

The Sea of Monsters is the second book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series. It is yet another Greek mythology and fantasy book that follows Percy’s second year at camp half-blood; a place for those who are half-human and half god. When Percy arrives at camp, he realizes there are bigger problems than the cannibal giants he has just encountered at school. The border at camp which keeps the monsters out is broken and his friend Grover is in trouble. He must find the golden fleece, a magical fleece with healing abilities, to save the border. He must also stop his new enemy from raising a big threat to Olympus and the rest of the world. This book is truly amazing. I love the new elements added to this series with the Sea of Monsters. The characters are well developed and give dimension to the story. The plot is also unexpected and always captivating. It is a must for anyone who enjoys adventure and fantasy. - Nevaeh, 13, SAPL Read It & Review Contributor

Camp-Half Blood is supposed to be a place where demigods are safe from mythological monsters. However, someone poisoned Thaila’s(daughter of Zeus) tree which gives the barrier around the camp the power to protect. The camp counselor, Chiron is accused of this and a new counselor takes his place. The Golden Fleece is the only thing that will be able to heal Thalia’s tree and keep the camp safe from monsters. The new counselor, Tantalus, appoints Clarisse LaRue, daughter of Ares who is the god of war, to find the Golden Fleece. Meanwhile, Percy constantly gets dreams warning him that Grover is being hunted by a monster. He leaves camp along with Annabeth and Tyson(a cyclops and son of Poseidon) to save Grover. They reach Luke’s(son of Hermes) cruise ship only to discover he is a traitor to the gods, by working to revive the Titan, Kronos. After Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson escape, they join Clarisse on her quest. Together they must journey across the Sea of Monsters also known as the Bermuda Triangle to retrieve the Golden Fleece and save Camp-Half Blood.
What I like about this book is there is a lot more depth and background information given to the main characters especially Annabeth and Luke. I also like the mystery added to the beginning which keeps the reader interested for the rest of this book. Additionally, I like the ambiguous ending of the book. What I disliked about this book is the ending felt very rushed and it would have been better if the details were spread out more.

The second book in the Percy Jackson pentalogy series, The Sea of Monsters is a worthy addition to the series. Now thirteen year old Percy Jackson must venture out to save not only his close satyr friend Grover, but Thalia’s tree at Camp Half Blood which has been mysteriously poisoned. Many of the characters from the first book return, and are given meaningful arcs in the story. Again, author Rick Riordan incorporates many stories and references from Greek mythology into the book, teaching young readers about Greek mythology through an entertaining read. Throughout the book important themes such as family are discussed, giving young readers an important lesson to learn. Overall, The Sea of Monsters is a fun read that will surely entertain readers of any age.

Camp Half Blood was meant to be a haven for demigods. When the tree of the demigod daughter of Zeus, Thalia Grace is poisoned, however, the barrier around Camp Half Blood that prevents monsters from entering is weakened. The kind Camp Counsellor Chiron is falsely accused of poisoning the tree on the grounds that his father is Kronos, the evil titan of time. The new camp counsellor is Tantalus, a sinner who had the punishment of being starved and dehydrated while standing in a river with an apple hanging over his head. The only solution for the poisoning of the tree is to retrieve the Golden Fleece, which has incredible healing powers. In order to obtain this, a quest for the Golden Fleece is issued, but Tantalus refuses to allow Percy to participate in the quest. Percy receives a dream of his friend, Grover Underwood pleading for help, saying he is being held captive near the Golden Fleece.

Afterwards, Percy talks to Hermes about the god’s son, Luke who attempted to kill him. With his encouragement, Percy, Annabeth, and Percy’s half-brother, Tyson all leave camp to find Grover. They must save Grover, prove Chiron innocent, and heal Thalia’s tree, but most importantly, they must find out what Luke is really planning.

Great sequel to Lightning Thief. Fast paced and action packed like all other Rick Riordan books. The characters felt real and relatable, and the first person point of view made me feel immersed in the story.

After retrieving Zeus's lightning bolt and saving the world from the god's wrath, Percy Jackson doesn't anticipate much more trouble. Until the borders of Camp Half-Blood begin dissolving. With the help of his new friends Annabeth and Grover, they set out to find a magical item that will preserve their crumbling defenses: the Golden Fleece. Setting course to the sea of monsters is a daunting task, and one Percy can't do alone. Can him and is friends save the camp? This book is definitely a page turner, and will leave you rushing to the third novel.

"The real story of the Fleece: there were these two children of Zeus, Cadmus and Europa, okay? They were about to get offered up as human sacrifices, when they prayed to save them. So Zeus sent this magical flying ram with golden wool, which picked them up in Greece and carried them all the way to Colchis in Asia Minor. Well, actually it carried Cadmus. Europa fell off and died along the way, but that's not important."

"It was probably important to her."

On Percy's last day of school, he and his friend/cyclops half-brother Tyson are attacked by giants. Annabeth appears and saves them before leaving for camp. When they arrive, Percy learns that Thalia's tree, the tree protecting the camp, has been poisoned and Chiron has been accused of poisoning and he was fired. If Thalia's tree fully dies, then the camp boarders won't be protected and more Monsters will start attacking the camp. This will continue unless they find another way to protect the camp borders or the camp will be overrun by monsters. To save the tree, a quest is given to find the Golden Fleece. Clarisse La Rue, a daughter of Ares, will lead the quest to find the Golden Fleece. Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson sneak off, not just for the Golden Fleece, but to find their friend Grover Underwood. They meet Luke on the ship, but are able to escape. They soon join with Clarisse on her quest. Her ship is destroyed passing through the Sea of Monsters and Annabeth and Percy continue their search for Grover after becoming separated from the others. After encountering the sirens and Circe, Annabeth and Percy reach the Polyphemus' cave. They are able to rescue Grover and Clarisse and Tyson helps defeats Polyphemus. They recover the fleece and head to Miami. Clarisse heads to camp and the others are captured by Luke.
