A wonderful telling of a horrible time in American history. The lives of 4 soldier was detailed along with many others. There was no glorification of the war, just how it effected the soldiers and those at home. Some actual footage intermixed with re-enactments was very good.

My father served our country in one of Patton's tank battalions. Growing up he didn't tell us much. It wasn't until much later in life, that I learned more. American soldiers suffered immensely and we should never forget. This program should be watched by all.

a superb documentary.

what is so special is the focus on what individual soldiers and citizen-prisoners went thru fighting, as well as the relationship with family and loved ones, and what their return to their home was like as they sought to build a new life.

Most films on war focus just on the battles and the fighting...What about the people fighting it?

Ken Burns is great but this one is long and boring and overwrought with sentimentality . Many superior documentarys on WWII have been done already so why did he rehash the same shit ??

One of the best films I have seen in this year. It was entertaining and interesting. Great performances a must see for all. “Truly a really great movie worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box”.

I greatly appreciate the inclusion of the story of what happened to the Japanese-Americans on the West Coast during the Second World War.

Ken Burns is in a class by himself. So thorough, very real, often poignant. (I still think his "Civil War" series is his masterpiece. We own it).

Once again Ken Burns film making has created a record of a time and a people that ring so completely true it is as if you are there. Quite a feat of time travel. Excellent coverage of this horrific time that includes first person accounts of the home front and the fighting and prisioner of war camps. Each part of the story is seen through the eyes of four towns and the citizens that fought and the citizens that stayed at home. Amazing full color film is insterseprsed with black and white to convey the true horror of the war that shaped a generation no matter where they were.
