Pathological liar Clifford Irving stages a complex hoax. In the 1970's Irving managed to fool a major publisher and LIFE magazine into thinking he was writing an authorized biography of Howard Hughes. Irving and his best friend and partner, Dick Susskind, go to extreme lengths to pull off the hair-brained scheme. The more outrageous the lies they concoct, the more believable they become and the more money gets thrown at them. Inspired by the unbelievable true story of the man who faked the authorized autobiography of Howard Hughes and nearly pulled off the media scam of the 20th century.

Richard Gere was the only reason I rented this, and as good as he is in it, it took me literally two weeks to watch it. Every time I would settle in to watch, I'd end up falling asleep. In a word-boring. The acting is good, and it's interesting toward the beginning, but it seemed to drag. I found myself constantly checking the time to see how much of the movie was left. Interesting story, but could have been better. The ending was kind of rushed, like the writers realized that "Oh no! We are almost out of time! We have to wrap this up quick!"

It's a good story and a mediocre movie.

Talented cast and engaging story.

A fun kind of character study. Gere and Molina play two writers who concoct a fake autobiography of the reclusive tycoon Howard Hughes, reasoning that he'll never come out of seclusion and that everyone considers the man to be completely crazy. As they get deeper and deeper into the con and pass up opportunities to step away from what they're doing, the audience can't help but be amused by their audacity and the way they keep talking their way through trouble. Gere is marvelous as Cliff Irving, playing the part with a smug disregard for the rules, nearly devoid of any scruples- at least until the end. Molina's seemingly a better person, and should really know better than to get involved in this scam, but you can see the actor's having fun with the role. The two are backed up by a terrific supporting cast as the story plays out in a brisk way, and the end result is an entertaining and funny life lesson on what happens when you refuse to let go of a lie.. even to the point when you're starting to believe it.

Lasse Hallstom is a better director than Oliver Stone, and The Hoax is an engrossing account of Clifford Irving's marvellous and almost successful attempt to make the world believe in his version of the Hughes saga. Richard Gere is just right as Irving, and Alfred Molina has some moving moments as Susskind, the man who should have known better.
