"When Anne Perry put Thomas and Charlotte Pitt on the case, we are in exemplary company." - New York Times. When Charlotte Pitt learns of her mother's distress in losing a locket with a compromising picture, she has no idea that it could lead to murder. Hidden behind the sumptuous elegance of Rutland Place were terrible secrets - secrets so horrifying that only murder could conceal them. The persistence of Thomas and Charlotte puts the popular sleuthing couple in the middle of a chilling, and possibly deadly, puzzle.

Someone in Rutland Place, Charlotte's old home, is stealing valuables, and her mother is one of the victims. She and Emily try to help her mother, as some of them reappear. What's going on, and why? It's not a matter for the police, at least not until murder happens. Another interesting viewpoint on Victorian marriage and what it can do to couples over the years.
